Cape Cod Whale Watching is quite the unbelievable experience until you witness it for yourself. Whale Watches are available from several different ports. Wherever you leave from depends on if you prefer a longer auto ride or a longer boat ride as most all whale watches will take you to the Stellwagen Banks which is the feeding area for the whales while summering in the North Atlantic.
Now who says whales aren't smart, summer on the
cape and winter in the Caribbean, not a bad way to go huh.
Below are several photos from our whale watch, but you
really need to experience this up front and personal
to get the full impact.
Whale Watches are offered from Provincetown aboard
The Dolphin Fleet, and Portugese Princess. Leaving
from Provincetown seems to be the shortest boat
ride as it is closest to the Stellwagen Banks. Whale
watches depart from MacMillan Wharf in Provincetown.
From Hyannis take the Hyannis Whale Watcher (which we
took out of Hyannis Harbor). We departed approx. 10:30am
and returned around 2:30pm. Leaving from Hyannis seems
to be about the half way point for driving and time
spent on the boat.
From Plymouth whale watches are offered by
Capt.Johns Boats from the town pier. Plymouth
seems to be longer on the boat ride as it is
further away from Stellwagen Banks.
Words alone don't come close to describing the beauty
of the whales as they come up close to your boat. One
of those things where you just had to be there. Our
guide informed us that these beauties weigh in at approx.
1 ton per foot of length. Most seemed to be estimated at 30-40 feet long.
Types of whales you may get to view while on your Cape Cod Whale Watching Cruise are to include Humpbacks, North Atlantic Right Whales, and Minke whales being the most common.
Take a look at some great video from a Cape Cod Whale Watch from Provincetown.
